Disruption and Deviation

Uranus governs sudden change, invention, rebellion and whatever refuses to conform. It takes about eighty-four years to circle the zodiac, spending roughly seven in each sign.

Seven years to a sign means everybody born within several years of you shares your Uranus sign. It describes a cohort rather than a person.

It was discovered in 1781, which means the tradition operated for most of its history without it and its meanings were assigned afterwards, largely by association with the name astronomers chose.

How It Becomes Personal

Two things pull Uranus out of the background: its house placement, which depends on your birth time, and any close aspect it makes to a personal planet.

Uranus in your sign is shared with millions. Uranus on your ascendant or square your Sun is a feature of your chart specifically.

Without either, reading its sign as a personality trait produces a description that fits an entire birth decade equally well.

Uranus's house is where you refuse to conform and where your life is least likely to proceed on schedule.

It is traditionally read as the area where change arrives without warning and where routine does not establish itself, for better and worse.

Its aspects tend to speed up and destabilise. Uranus with Mercury is a fast, jumping mind; with Venus, attraction to the unconventional and to freedom inside relationships.

The Half-Return

Uranus opposes its natal position at around forty-two, halfway through its orbit, and this transit is the astrological candidate for the midlife crisis.

As with the Saturn return, the age is close enough to an ordinary life stage that the transit and the biography cannot be separated.

The traditional reading is a demand for authenticity — the parts of a life that were adopted rather than chosen coming under pressure.
