A Number That Moves
Almost everything else on this site is fixed for life. The personal year is the exception: it advances every twelve months, which is why it is the calculation people return to each January.
It is computed from your birth month, your birth day and the calendar year currently running — your birth year is deliberately absent, because this measures where you are in a cycle rather than who you are.
The cycle runs one to nine and then begins again, and each position is read as a different phase of a longer arc.
The Shape of the Nine Years
The tradition reads the sequence as a single arc rather than nine unrelated years. One opens something. Two and three develop and express it. Four consolidates and is usually the hardest work. Five disrupts.
Six turns toward responsibility and other people. Seven withdraws and reassesses. Eight is where accumulated effort is supposed to return something. Nine closes the cycle and clears the ground for the next one.
Read that way, a difficult year has a position in a structure rather than being simply a bad year, which is most of what the framework is offering.
When the Year Turns
Practitioners disagree about whether the personal year begins on 1 January or on your birthday, and both conventions are in wide use.
This instrument uses the calendar year, which is the more common approach and the one that makes the number comparable between people. If your source uses the birthday convention, expect a mismatch for the months between January and your birth date.
Neither is more correct. It is a convention, and the useful thing is knowing which one you are reading.
What to Do With It
The honest use is as a prompt at a regular interval. Whether or not a nine-year rhythm governs anything, reviewing where you are once a year against a described phase is a reasonable habit, and the framework supplies the occasion.
The dishonest use is deferral — declining to start something because the number says consolidate, or waiting for a five year to make a change. The tradition describes an emphasis; it does not issue instructions.
The result here also shows the year that follows, because the arc is the interesting part and a single year in isolation says very little.
