Why a Date Alone Is Not Enough
Sign boundaries are astronomical events, not calendar dates. Zero degrees Aries is the March equinox — an instant that shifts through a window of roughly thirty hours from year to year, because the tropical year is about 365.2422 days long and the calendar approximates that with leap days.
Every other boundary inherits the drift, since all twelve are measured in thirty-degree steps from the equinox. So the moment the Sun enters Capricorn genuinely differs between one year and the next.
This instrument asks for your birth year because the year is part of the question. With it, the answer is computed from the Sun's real position on your date; without it, no honest answer is available for anybody born near a line.
Who This Actually Changes
If your birthday sits well inside a sign, none of this matters. The Sun was ten or fifteen degrees in, and no amount of calendar drift was going to move it.
The affected group is people born within about a day of a boundary, and for them a fixed table is a coin flip performed silently. Someone born on 22 December may be Sagittarius or Capricorn depending on the year, and a table asserting that Capricorn begins on the 22nd is simply wrong for some of those years.
Where you land close enough that it could have gone either way, this instrument says so on the result rather than concealing the margin.
What the Sun Actually Governs
The Sun is read as direction rather than description — what a person is oriented toward and working out over a lifetime, rather than the texture of their daily behaviour.
This is why sun sign profiles so often read as slightly ahead of the reader, describing someone a little more fully themselves than you feel on a given Tuesday. They describe a trajectory.
It is also one placement out of ten. The Sun's dominance in popular astrology is an accident of newspaper economics — a column can only ask for a birth date, and the Sun is the layer a date reliably determines.
The Cusp Question
There is no such thing as being born under two signs. At any given moment the Sun occupies one degree of one sign, and the boundary is exact.
What is real is that some birthdays fall close enough to a boundary that the answer depends on the year and cannot be looked up. Being told you are on the cusp usually means somebody could not compute it rather than that you are genuinely between.
A full chart serves a boundary birthday far better than any hyphenated label, because it shows exactly which bodies fell on which side.
Two Zodiacs, One More Disagreement
If another source gives you a completely different sign — not a neighbouring one — it is probably using the sidereal zodiac rather than the tropical one.
Tropical anchors to the equinox; sidereal anchors to the constellations. The Earth's axial wobble has separated the two by about twenty-four degrees, which is most of a sign, so a tropical Leo is frequently a sidereal Cancer.
Neither is wrong and they are not interchangeable. Everything on this site is tropical, which is what virtually all Western astrology means by a sign.
