Moon Mirror

The sign the Moon truly occupied at your birth — the private self underneath the public one.

The Fastest Body in the Chart

The Moon travels roughly thirteen degrees of the zodiac a day — about a sign every two and a half days, and the entire circle inside a month. Nothing else in a chart moves at anything like that rate.

That speed is why the moon sign is the placement most often assigned incorrectly. A tool working from a date alone is right about five times out of six and confidently wrong the rest of the time, with no signal to the reader about which case they are in.

This instrument computes the Moon's actual ecliptic longitude for your birth moment using an abridged form of the ELP-2000/82 lunar theory. It is accurate to well inside the thirty-degree width of a sign, which is the precision the question requires.

What the Placement Describes

The Moon is read as the private layer: instinct, emotional habit and the conditions a person needs before they can settle into anything.

Where the Sun describes a direction of travel, the Moon describes what you are carrying and what it costs you to keep going. It governs the reaction that arrives before thought — which is why people recognise an accurate moon sign faster than an accurate sun sign.

It is also the usual explanation for a sun sign that never quite fitted. Fire Sun with a water Moon reads as neither in isolation: someone pursuing expansive things who needs a great deal of emotional safety while doing it.

When Your Birth Hour Decides It

On most dates the Moon held one sign from midnight to midnight and your birth hour is irrelevant. On the dates when it crossed, the hour decides the answer completely, and the crossing is a specific minute rather than a vague window.

Roughly one birth date in twelve falls on a crossing. This instrument checks yours specifically: if the Moon stayed put, it tells you the hour would not have changed anything, so a missing birth time costs you nothing here.

If it crossed, you get the sign it left, the sign it entered and the time of the crossing in universal time. You can then see exactly what turns on the hour rather than being handed a generic warning.

Reading It Without a Birth Time

Enter the date and leave the hour empty and you will still get an answer, computed for midday.

For most people that answer is simply correct, and the instrument will say so. For the minority born on a crossing day it is a coin flip, and the instrument will say that too, with the exact time you would need to resolve it.

This is the whole design in one behaviour: the same calculation, with an honest account of its own uncertainty attached to the cases that actually have any.

Where to Take It Next

A moon sign on its own is one placement. What gives it detail is a house — which area of life your emotional life is organised around — and that needs the hour and the birthplace.

The full birth chart supplies the Moon, the Sun and the ascendant together, which is the combination most readings are built on, along with the seven other bodies.

If your reason for being here was a sun sign that never fitted, the Moon is the highest-value thing to add, and it usually resolves the mismatch on its own.
