What You Need Rather Than What You Want

The Moon governs instinct, emotional habit and the conditions required before a person can settle into anything. It is the most private placement in a chart.

Where the Sun is the direction of travel, the Moon is the equipment you are travelling with — and people recognise an accurate moon sign considerably faster than an accurate sun sign.

It describes behaviour under stress and in private, which is where anybody is least performing and most themselves.

The Fastest Thing in the Chart

The Moon covers about thirteen degrees a day, changing sign roughly every two and a half days and completing the circle within a month. Nothing else moves at anything like that rate.

That speed is why moon signs are misassigned so often. On roughly one birth date in twelve the Moon crossed a boundary, and on those dates the birth hour decides the answer entirely.

In the Chart

The Moon's house shows where your emotional life is organised — the area you retreat to and the one where security is most at stake.

It is also the placement most often responsible for a sun sign feeling wrong. A fire Sun with a water Moon pursues expansive things while needing a great deal of safety, and neither description alone captures that.

Aspects to the Moon tend to be felt rather than observed, which makes them harder to describe and easier to recognise once described.

Phase Is a Separate Matter

The Moon's sign and the Moon's phase are independent facts, and they get conflated constantly.

The sign is its position against the zodiac; the phase is its angle relative to the Sun. A natal chart uses the sign, and the phase belongs to the lunar calendar rather than to a birth chart.

Some practitioners do read a natal phase as a secondary layer. It is a minority technique rather than a standard part of chart reading.
