A Symbol That Splits Cleanly
Few images divide traditions so sharply. Snakes read as threat, deceit and betrayal in much of the European tradition, and as healing, wisdom and renewal in a great many others.
The medical caduceus and the rod of Asclepius both carry serpents, and the association of snakes with healing long predates the association with treachery in the same region.
This is the clearest case on the site for why a single-answer dictionary cannot work. Two established traditions give directly opposite readings of an identical dream.
Shedding
The reading that recurs across almost all of them is transformation, and it comes from an observable fact: a snake sheds its skin and emerges intact.
Read that way, a snake dream concerns a version of yourself being outgrown rather than a danger approaching. It tends to appear during periods of change rather than periods of threat.
Where a dream contains a shedding snake specifically, this reading is the one most traditions would reach for regardless of their view of snakes generally.
Why They Appear at All
Snakes and spiders show up in dreams far more often than modern exposure to them would predict, and the standard explanation is evolutionary — a prepared readiness to attend to certain shapes, retained long after the environment changed.
That explains the frequency without touching the meaning, and it is worth separating the two questions. Why the image is available is a different matter from what your mind did with it.
It also means a snake dream is not necessarily about anything. Sometimes the most salient available image gets used.
Your Own Reaction Is the Data
The most useful detail in a snake dream is how you felt inside it. Calm proximity to a snake reads entirely differently from panic, and dreamers reliably remember which it was.
Someone frightened of snakes while awake brings that association into the dream, and the reading has to account for it. Someone who keeps reptiles does not have the same dream at all.
Where a general tradition and your own association conflict, your association is the better guide. It is the one that was actually present.
