Animals are broadly read as instinct — the part of a person that acts before deliberation arrives. That reading holds across a wide range of traditions and is the most useful starting point.
What consistently matters more than the species is the animal's condition: wild, tame, caged, injured, or following you. Those states describe your relationship to the instinct rather than the instinct itself.
Being attacked reads as an instinct experienced as threatening. Following one reads as trusting it. Caging one reads as suppression, and it is a common dream during periods of restraint.
Species Carry Contradictory Baggage
Specific animals attract heavy and often opposite cultural associations. Owls are wisdom in one tradition and death in another; cats are luck or ill luck depending on where you are standing; dogs are loyalty almost everywhere and threat in several places.
This means a general list is close to useless for species. Any source giving one confident meaning per animal has picked a lineage without telling you.
Your own association is worth considerably more here than any recorded tradition, particularly if you have a real relationship with the animal in question.
Pets and Familiar Animals
Dreaming of your own animal is usually not symbolic at all. It is the same continuity that produces dreams about family members, and it means what it appears to mean.
Dreams of an animal that has died follow the pattern of grief dreams generally: common, often comforting, sometimes painful, and not requiring interpretation.
The symbolic reading becomes relevant when the animal is unfamiliar, which is when the mind has had to select one rather than simply reproduce one.
Why Certain Animals Recur
Snakes, spiders and large predators appear in dreams far more often than modern life would predict, and the standard explanation is a retained readiness to attend to particular shapes.
That explains availability rather than meaning. The image was easy to reach for; what your mind built with it is a separate question.
It does mean that not every animal dream is about something. Sometimes the most available image simply got used, and reading it hard produces meaning that was never there.
