The Cycle Starts in the Dark

At new moon the Moon sits roughly between the Earth and the Sun, so the lit face is turned away and there is nothing to see. It is the only phase that is invisible, and the cycle is counted from it.

Because it is unobservable, it is the phase most dependent on calculation rather than on looking, which is a small irony given how much intention-setting material is attached to it.

It also rises and sets with the Sun, which is why the sky is genuinely dark at night around a new moon and why it is the best time of the month for seeing anything else.

Intention Rather Than Announcement

The traditional reading is deciding rather than declaring — working out privately what the next month is for before committing anybody else to it.

The distinction between intention and announcement recurs across the material and is the more useful half of it. Something decided quietly is easier to abandon if it turns out to be wrong.

Practically, this is a reasonable monthly prompt: what am I actually starting, and does it need to be said out loud yet.

New Moon in a Sign

A new moon occurs in a different sign each month, and practitioners who track this read the two together — the opening, and the register it opens in.

A new moon in Capricorn and one in Pisces are read as beginnings of quite different kinds, structural in the first case and diffuse in the second.

That is two facts combined rather than one, and it is where the more specific monthly interpretations come from.

Where This Overreaches

There is a large amount of material prescribing rituals, lists and specific practices for new moons, often with considerable confidence about timing.

None of it has any grounding beyond convention, and the more prescriptive versions are recent rather than traditional. A cycle is a description, not an appointment.
